What is is?
Brazilian Jiujitsu, or BJJ, as you will often hear it called is a martial art, sport and self defence technique.
It can be learned and applied affectively by children, women and men regardless of size or strength.
BJJ emphasises the use of leverage and angles to efficiently defend and attack. It is a very fluid and dynamic martial art.
What will I learn?
You will learn throws or take downs from a standing position, from a self defence aspect you will learn to be more body conscious and know what to do if an attacker were to grab you.
For the most part BJJ will focus on techniques that can be applied from the ground, you will learn to fall correctly and establish a position where you can keep your self safe. From a sporting perspective you will learn how to progress through the positions and apply attacks such as chokes and arm locks.
What will a typical class involve?
Class will start with a dynamic warm up to prepare the muscles that will be used when training, following this there will be stretching and do some light drills. The main part of the lesson will involve working on one or two particular aspects or techniques. The last part of the class will be sparring or rolling as it more commonly referred to. This involves starting from the knees and grappling with a training partner to reach a dominant position.
Benefits of BJJ
You will see a quick improvement in your fitness levels often within as little as a month of training.
If your goal is weight loss than BJJ can be very useful, the sparing element of class is comparable to high intensity interval training which has been documented as one of the best methods of fat loss.
As BJJ trains the whole body you will see improvements in strength, balance flexibility and coordination.
